Est. 2019 — Portland, Oregon

The roastery

A drum roaster, a cupping table, and seven years of batch logs on Foundry Lane.

The story

Named for a sound.

First crack is the moment beans open with an audible pop and roasting becomes a series of decisions. We named the roastery after it because that is the part we care about: listening, measuring, writing it down.

First Crack has roasted on Foundry Lane since 2019. The menu has never grown past three origins — enough variety to matter, few enough that every batch gets compared against its own history in the log.

Come cup with us.

The cafe pours everything on the current log, and every Saturday morning we set the cupping table for anyone who wants to taste all three origins side by side.
